So it’s like regular 4-1-2-1-2, but with wing backs?
The Line Ups
Our Line Up

So, as tends to happen with a lot of the formations we’ve been using, we have a few key positions where we are strong and then we have to fill in the rest with what we can.
Our strongest elements here are GK, CB, DM and AM and this is even with a heavily rotated squad!
Average Squad Rating: 38.8
Opponent’s Line Up

I always like to see what positions other Footium players prioritise. Generally we see a lot of buyers for CB, CF and GK as they are used in pretty much every formation in Footium. So I have mad respect for this team putting all their eggs in the LF basket.
Average Squad Rating: 39.8
This makes our opponent’s Average Squad Rating 1 better than ours.
Real Life Context
It’s quite hard to find examples of 4-1-2-1-2 being used in real life but with relatively wide full backs. The closest we can really find is the 2013/2014 Brendan Rogers Liverpool FC squad. One of the iconic Liverpool eras, with Sturridge and Suarez banging goals in, Philippe Coutinho actually being in good form and players like Glen Johnson flying forward from fullback.
Strengths:
- Midfield Domination: With the diamond centrally on the pitch, this formation is ideal for dominating the centre of the park and allowing the DM and AM to have space to shine.
- Two Strikers. Less and less teams are playing with 2 strikers in 2025, so it’s something that’s incredibly difficult for defenders to line up against.
- Flexibility. The two CM’s offer a lot of flexibility, as they can push forward alongside the AM to create 5 attackers, or drop behind the ball to really bolster the defense.
Weaknesses:
- Width. This formation lacks width, and this can be very dangerous. The full backs can get overloaded and suffer a lot.
- CAM man marking. As a lot has to go through the CAM, if they are man marked or taken out of the game, then it can be difficult for that link between midfield and attack to work.
The Match

So, I’m pretty happy with this one!
We had a weaker squad, and were weak in some of the most important areas of the pitch. Namely, our wingbacks and centre mids. Yet, despite this, we had more possession, loads more passes (see midfield dominance) and got stuck in with some fouls.
1-1 a very good result.
See you all on the pitch!
